On Tuesday, a Turkish Airlines long-haul flight headed for Canada unexpectedly diverted to Manchester Airport when the flight crew reported a mechanical problem while travelling over the North Sea.
On time, at 16:40 local time (TRT), flight TK17 took off from Istanbul Airport for Toronto Pearson International Airport. A Boeing 777-300ER registered TC-JJR was operating the flight.
The aircrew had a mechanical issue almost four hours into the transatlantic flight while travelling at 32,000 feet. Pilots coordinated with air traffic control and fell into a holding pattern over the North Sea at 26,000 feet in order to safely resolve the problem.
The crew then asked for a diversion to the United Kingdom’s Manchester Airport (MAN). At 19:30 local time, the aircraft made a safe landing on Runway 23L after being directed toward the airport by air traffic authorities.
The widebody aircraft was thoroughly inspected by engineers on the Manchester tarmac. Flight TK17 was authorised to continue its voyage after receiving technical clearance and refuelling.
About three hours after landing, the plane pushed back and began the last seven-hour flight over the Atlantic in the direction of Toronto.
Today, July 28, a Turkish Airlines flight had to be diverted to Manchester Airport.
According to flight data, flight THY1GJ, which was flying from Istanbul to Toronto, landed at approximately 7:30 p.m. after making a few laps over the North Sea and possibly dumping fuel to make the landing.
After the plane touched down in Manchester, a number of fire engines were on the scene and seen moving in its direction.
The aircraft had a “technical issue,” but it has since been fixed, according to a Manchester Airport spokesperson.
