On Wednesday, July 22, Flight BA547, flying an Airbus A320-251N registered G-TTNR, took off from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) for London Heathrow (LHR).
The aircraft eventually made a safe arrival at the airport after the crew resolved the technical problem. The flight was supposed to arrive at Heathrow Terminal 5. G-TTNR was the aircraft assigned to BA547 that day, according to flight-tracking data.
A hydraulic malfunction affecting the landing gear caused the crew to begin a go-around as the aircraft was on final approach to Heathrow’s Runway 09L. After reaching a height of around 4,000 feet, the aircraft went into a holding pattern and then made another approach.
About 35 minutes after the go-around, the aircraft touched down safely on Runway 09L. Due to the alleged landing-gear issue, airport emergency and fire services were positioned to assist the aircraft after the landing as a precaution.
Heathrow’s operations were temporarily impacted by the incident as well. While the aircraft was being handled on the runway, the airport temporarily switched to single-runway operations. Before regular two-runway operations resumed following the aircraft’s inspection and clearance, arrivals were temporarily handled on the other runway. In relation to the incident, no injuries have been reported.
According to flight-tracking records, BA547 arrived at Heathrow at approximately 13:45 BST, almost 40 minutes after its scheduled arrival time of 13:05 BST, and left Rome after its scheduled departure time of 11:15 CEST.
The flight typically travels 1,445 km between London Heathrow and Rome Fiumicino. According to the reports that are now available, the issue is a landing gear hydraulic failure. However, as of the time of writing, neither British Airways nor the UK Civil Aviation Authority or the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch had provided a formal, comprehensive technical explanation.
Thus, the exact reason behind the hydraulic failure is yet unknown. Without any reported injuries, the aircraft successfully completed its second approach and landed at Heathrow. The temporary runway restrictions were subsequently lifted and airport operations returned to normal.
