After disclosing the aftermath of an overnight fire, the proprietors of a well-known Swansea café declared they were “absolutely devastated.”
Verdi’s Café in Mumbles has reported the fire’s aftermath. The well-known waterfront establishment is anticipated to stay closed while the damage is evaluated.
Just hours after patrons had been enjoying the popular café, which is well-known for its ice cream, Italian cuisine, and views of Swansea Bay, the fire started overnight.
When clients arrived on Thursday morning, they were greeted by the smell of smoke and evidence of the fire’s destruction.
The main seating area has reportedly sustained smoke and water damage, and parts of the roof have also sustained damage, despite the fact that the fire was limited to the kitchen and lavatory. The family stated that they are still evaluating the damage and are unsure of when the café will be ready to reopen.
In 2023, the Hole family replaced the Moruzzi family, who had owned the café for several generations. Verdi’s has been a Swansea institution for many years. The Lighthouse and The Secret Bar and Kitchen are also owned by the family.
The family posted the following on social media: “Verdi’s was affected by a fire overnight.”
“We’re relieved that no one was hurt and that everyone is safe, even if we’re still processing what happened.
“We’re completely devastated, but as soon as it’s safe to do so, we’ll do everything in our power to get Verdi’s back open.”
“We are extremely appreciative of all the words of support already, and we know how much the restaurant means to our team, our customers, and the Swansea community.
As we learn more over the next few days, we’ll keep everyone informed.
We would like to formally thank the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service for their prompt and competent response.
“I appreciate your understanding, tolerance, and unwavering support.”
Social media users responded to the statement by posting encouraging remarks and volunteering to assist the family rebuild the café.
“So sorry to hear this,” remarked one commenter. I’m relieved that nobody was harmed. I hope you will soon be operating again and giving Rustis!
“Do you need volunteers to help get things back and running?” said another. Even if it’s just to tidy up and remove the damage?
“Like many people across Swansea, I was deeply saddened to hear about the fire at Verdi’s,” stated Gwyn Williams, MS for the Gyr Abertawe constituency, on social media in support of the café. It’s an institution, not just a café.
“Swansea residents have created memories here for generations. We are thinking of the owners, the family, the employees, and all those impacted. We appreciate the emergency services’ quick response.

According to Mumbles Seafront Café in 2023, the company is currently working on the evaluation and plans to provide a more detailed update the following week.
At 2:09 a.m. on Thursday, firefighters from Swansea West, Swansea Central, and Port Talbot were dispatched to the Knab Rock café.
According to the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was limited to the loo and kitchen. By 4.44am, the crews had departed using two hose reel jets, four breathing apparatus sets, a thermal imaging camera and a gas monitor.
Sections of the roof were damaged, and the main sitting area still had water and smoke damage. Overnight photos revealed flames penetrating the ceiling.
On Thursday, the fire department stated that the cause was unknown.
Hole acknowledged the squad that he claims is struggling the most and thanked everyone for the comments that have been received since.
He remarked, “I feel bad for Giuseppe, Jon, Rob, Ivanna, and the team.” They are intelligent individuals who genuinely care about Verdi’s and its clients. They are obviously devastated because it is their second home.
He also discussed the criticism that the company has received since then.
“I’ve grown accustomed to the criticism that comes with operating a business over the years, but some of the remarks over the past 24 hours have been disappointing,” he remarked. “Please don’t question our integrity or the care we have for our people, our customers, and our businesses, even though we may not be perfect.”
